Mahe Insel, Seychellen

Mahe Island is the largest Island (155 km2) of the 115 islands that make up Seychelles. It is home to the Victoria – capital city of the state and at the same time the smallest capital in the world. Mahe is the most inhabited island of the archipelago, with 77,000 people living here, almost 90% of the Seychelles population.

Mahe is the starting point for travel by ferry, plane or helicopter to other Seychelles islands. But before you go explore the archipelago, stay a while on Mahe Island: local sights and entertainment deserve special attention. The whole island is densely covered with luxuriant vegetation and famous for its beaches and mountain peaks.

Seychelles beaches

Seychelles beaches are among the top best beaches in the world. The real jewel in the crown of Mahe beaches is Beau Vallon. It stretches to a length of 2 kilometers and stands out due to its active nightlife and well-developed infrastructure - luxury hotels, restaurants with multinational cuisine, bars, spas, diving clubs and shops.

In the northern part of Beau Vallon - North Coast Road - locals sell fresh fish and fruits with tents and grills of street-food vendors serving such delicacies as kebabs of octopus, tuna steaks and fried reef perch. On Wednesdays and Saturdays this part of the beach turns into a fair: Seychelles sell local handicrafts, clothes, jewelry. Trade turns into a real holiday to loud music, cocktails and dances.

Throughout the beach you`ll see small areas for lovers. At sunset, there is a table with light snacks, champagne. On the perimeter, there are flowers and a heart laid out of candles. Nearby you will notice the photographer: he circles around a romantic couple to capture the moment.

Beau Vallon beach ends with a bay. That's where the best place for snorkeling is: here corals are not dragged and broken by tourists, and shoals of colorful fish feel calm in the lush coral reefs. Equipment for diving or any other water sport is available for rent at Beau Vallon beach only.

Beau Vallon is just 3 kilometers from the capital, reachable by bus or taxi. The whole island of Mahe (which is 28 km long and 8 km wide) can be bypassed on foot in 2-3 days. But it is better to use a bicycle or a car, then you can leisurely tour the island in a few hours, climb the observation decks and visit the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Mahe sights

The largest island of Seychelles is replete with interesting places – a must visit for every tourist.

1. The Victoria Clock Tower. Symbol of the Mahe capital, a miniature replica of Big Ben - the clock tower at the Palace of Westminster in London.

2. Mission Lodge. This place is associated with the slavery abolition in Seychelles. There was a school for the children of freed slaves. It was founded in 1835 by the Church Missionary Society. Mission Lodge is now one of the island's most beautiful viewing platforms, offering dizzying views of the ocean and surrounding area.

3. Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market is the best place to experience the rhythm of Seychelles life. The local colour of the market is diverse: here you can find souvenirs, handmade products, flowers and, of course, fresh fruits, fish, vegetables and spices. The permanent scenery of Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market is the herons that wait every morning near the market for fish giblets specially prepared for birds by traders.
